Caching Around Mobile 3/13/2008

Well not as much history today as there was yesterday but we had a good day of caching anyway. We started out with a cache along one of the major highways in Mobile in a small park, then it was on to a series of 8 caches along Cottage Hill Rd all located in local drug stores. We did 4 of them today and hope to do the other 4 before we leave the area on Sunday. Then it was on to a cache in the Public Service Memorial Park, then one off an old abandoned road, one at Hooters Restaurant, then a puzzle cache located in a local 2-way radio business, one at a Burger King, one on a dead end street near a business that is no longer existent.
Then we did 2 caches located in a park that has provided quality baseball and softball programs to area boys and girls for many years. Teams from these programs have frequently won district and state championships, and even competed in the Little League World Series in 1990 and 1996. The park also serves as the home field of Murphy High School's varsity team, which has produced numerous baseball players who have gone on to play college and professional baseball. Both the caches were found in the woods along the trails.
The one cache that we loved doing was a cache located at Hank Aaron Stadium which of course is named after the baseball star who was born here in Mobile. He was raised in Toulminville and began his baseball career by playing shortstop and third base with the Central High School varsity team. His first professional ball was played with the Mobile Black Bears. He played in the Negro League for a time, but made the jump to the Major Leagues when he was acquired by the Boston Braves in 1952. Mobile is a baseball town with 5 Hall of Fame players being from this city. Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey, Satchel Paige, Ozzie Smith and Billy Williams all are from here. Many more MLB players and legends played high school and college baseball in Mobile, such as Tommie Agee, Frank and Milt Bolling, Cleon Jones, Amos Otis and Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe. Current major leaguers Terry Adams of the Pittsburg Pirates, Courtney Duncan of the Chicago White Sox, Jake Peavy of the San Diego Padres, Juan Pierre of the Chicago Cubs and Mark Woodard of the Detroit Tigers played their first games in Mobile parks just like this one. We really enjoyed looking around the stadium, visiting the gift shop and seeing the Hank Aaron 755 Club inside the stadium. The Stadium now plays host to the Southern League team the Mobile Bay Bears who were the 1998 Minor League Team of the Year and have won 2 Southern League Championships.
After this cache we stopped at Wal*Mart and picked up some groceries and headed back to the RV. Mom put the groceries away and I cleaned the car out inside and then she did the logs and to tell you the truth I took a snooze. I am doing the blog while we watch the news and then we are going to eat and end the day watching tv. We will say good night until tomorrow and we love you all.
