Cool and Windy Day of Caching on Toward Eastpoint 214/2008

Happy Valentine's Day to one and ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We got up and tried to get ready to go caching outside of Carrabelle on toward and into Eastpoint but things weren't going to well to start the day. First the Wi-Fi was all screwed up because of the heavy frost we had the night before so I had to use my internet card and that was slower than molasses in Jan. Then when I went to print the caches on our printer the color cartridge ran out and it wouldn't allow me to print anything until I replaced the cartridge, which I didn't have. We never use color to print and for some reason it used all the color ink to print in black & white. Well I finally found the option to just print in B & W so we finally did get them printed and we were off about 10:00. Well things didn't get much better as we couldn't find the first 3 caches we went looking for. The people that hide caches down here aren't to accurate with there coords and don't bother to check caches to see if they are still hidden if 2 or 3 people post DNF's. One cache we didn't find was one hidden at the Crooked River Lighthouse which was decommissioned in August of 1995 and attempts to preserve it are now being sought. It originally was built between 1893 and 1895 to replace a lighthouse on Dog Island that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1875 and after being rebuilt was placed on the more secure mainland. The lighthouse was 103' high and was originally painted red and black. It was electrified in 1933 and then automated and unmanned in 1952. In 1964 the lighthouse and buildings were sold and removed from the site.
Our first find was at a rest area along the beach that was used by the U. S. Army 4th Infantry Division to train for the Normandy Invasion on D-Day June 6, 1944. This beach and the beach on Dog Island were used to train troops for amphibious landings. Then it was on to Tate's Hell State Park (more on that tomorrow) and a cache back along a trail in the woods. We were walking back to the cache and scared up some kind of animal, don't know what though, and hoped it wasn't a bear and hustled back to the car after finding the cache. Then we found a cache hidden on a deserted beach, then one at a Pet Adoption Center and the last one was in Eastpoint in the woods behind a miniature golf. In between and after the last found cache there were lots of DNF's and ones we didn't really care to do because they were to long a walk or in thick woods. Wasn't a good day from the start and it sure didn't get any better as we headed back to the RV and had lunch and did our logs. We went out for Valentine's Day dinner to a little place recommended by the campgrounds and it was just ok as it was cold in the place, food was just fair and it was also kind of pricey for what you got. Oh well everybody has days like this and we expect them so we'll just write it off as a lost day and continue on. Well time to feed the puppies and eat so we will say until tomorrow and we love and miss you all.

If you went to 2 Als you should have tried Carols, Hog Wild or even Pirates. All are better. don't eat at the Hut in Eastpoint hold out for Papa Joes in Apalach or pick up sanwiches atm That's A Moray or go to the Owl. Don't eat anywhere on the Island.

They aren't seeking funds for the Crooked River Light. It's finished, up and running. They are still working on the St. George Light.
