On To St Augustine, FL 3/13/2010

We packed up Saturday morning and off we went south on RT 95 and arrived at the Indian River RV Resort about noon. We got all settled and took off in the car as we had to get groceries and I had to get the oil changed in the car. After we finished those chores we drove around Old St. Augustine and tried to picture it as it was 39 years ago when we were here last camping with the boys. Yes, 39 years ago we spent several vacations here at the Kon Tiki Campgrounds which was on the beach in St Augustine Beach camping in our tent camper. As yet we haven't been able to locate the campgrounds which we understand is still here but is a permanent RV resort with condos all around it. We did locate a restaurant we ate at which is still here. It's Salt Water Cowboys which 39 years ago was just Cowboys. It is still here and still serving GREAT food. It was located at that time on a dead end dirt road on the marsh and we can remember when we drove down to it we wondered whether we should go in or not as it looked like such a dive. Now there are houses on the road, it is paved but still looks like a dive. We did give it a try at that time and obviously are glad we did because it is excellent. We got there for dinner about 5:30 and had to wait for a table for 25 minutes and when we left they were lined up all over the place. We guess good things die hard and it was nice seeing a little bit of our past good times. The food was just as good as 39 years ago as Mom had frogs legs and I had fried oysters. After dinner back to the coach and watched TV. Well until next time we love and miss you all. Mom & Dad Dori & Dick

Hi There. My grandfather started up the Kon Tiki campground back in the 60s. He's turning 90 in October and I'm trying to compile stories, photos, or other fond memories people have of the place and give them all to him as a surprise for his birthday. If you have any memories you would like to share, I'd love to hear them (bobs90thbirthday@gmail.com). Thanks!
