On Our Way to Caruthersville, MO 4/14/2009

We left Southaven about 9:00 after packing up and getting propane and we were on our way to the Lady Luck Casino RV Park in Caruthersville, MO. This was one of the very few campgrounds between Memphis and Kentucky that wasn't a 5-6 hour drive so we decided to stay here a couple of night there. We got there about 12:30 after a nice drive through some of the flattest desolate countryside that we have ever seen. After we crossed the Mississippi River all it was was farm land as far as the eye could see. We kind of wondered where the houses or farms were? Well we got set up and went into the casino to register and came back and took a ride around town, which didn't take long, and stopped at Sonic and had lunch. After lunch we drove back to the RV and Mom wanted to walk over to the casino to win her fortune so off we went. We each took $10.00 and mine was gone in 5 minutes playing video poker. Mom on the other hand was playing a penny slot machine and she was there for about 15 minutes and ended up winning $1.67, wasn't quite her fortune but close. Back to the coach and I worked on the blog and pictures and Mom watched TV till dinner time, we ate and called it a day. One interesting thing about Caruthersville was during the night of Sunday, April 2, 2006, 60% of Caruthersville was severely damaged or destroyed by a string of tornadoes that passed through the Midwestern United States. At least one person was confirmed killed in Pemiscot County as a result of the tornado. On Monday morning, local police and state troopers had barred entrance into Caruthersville to anyone who was not a resident, an emergency worker, or a member of the newsmedia. According to the emergency management director from a nearby county, as many as 1,500 people were displaced by the storm, which struck the southwest side of the city. As reported by Caruthersville's mayor, Diane Sayre, there were no confirmed fatalities within city limits, but electricity and water services were disabled. Several churches, landmarks, and schools were destroyed or severely damaged, including St. John's Episcopal, Jesus Name Tabernacle, Faith Missionary Baptist, Caruthersville Municipal Airport, Caruthersville Cotton Warehouse, the Boy's and Girl's Club of the Bootheel, Knox's Drive In, the Kwik Chek, Caruthersville High School, and Caruthersville Middle School. There were no deaths in Caruthersville and there is still some evidence of the tornado that went through that night especially in the lack of, dead and damaged trees. Well time to say until tomorrow we love you all. Mom & Dad
