Caching in Lawrenceburg, TN 4/5/2009
We started out Sunday by going into the middle of the town with our caches loaded into the GPS and ready to go on a lovely warm sunny day. Although the caches here in Lawrenceburg weren't very historic or interesting, with a few exceptions, it did take us near some interesting sites. Our first cache was hanging in a pine tree, the second was on a old unused steel bridge, the third in a small park next to a lovely meandering stream, the fourth at a location where the Boy Scouts hold there meetings and fifth at a local pantry or food kitchen.
Our sixth cache was located at Davy Crockett's house from 1817 to 1822. He was one of the commissioners who laid out the county, and selected the site of Lawrenceburg, a colonel in the militia, justice of the peace, member of the legislature and an operator of several industries on Shoal Creek during his residency here. Many landmarks and businesses now include Crockett in their names. David Crockett State Park and the David Crockett Monument located on the city square are two well known spots that pay homage to the legendary outdoorsman.
Seventh cache at a Masonic Hall, eighth cache was in a small park again in a tree, ninth cache was along Shoal Creek in a tree, tenth cache was on a guardrail along the same creek, eleventh cache was at a Red Cross Center, twelveth cache was in a small garden behind the local hospital and the thirteenth cache was here in Davy Crockett SP just off a walking trail.
As I said not much historic as far as caches but we did see the Davy Crockett monument in the Historic Town Square along with a lovely gazebo and several memorials to the veterans of the many wars. Also in the Town Square were many old buildings that were either empty or housed antique shops or various other shops and 2 lovely murals painted on the walls of those buildings. We saw the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Circa 1851, the Davy Crockett movie theater that is vacant now and is occasionally used for concerts and of course many old lovely homes.
Well that was about it for the day as we drove back to the campgrounds and Mom did our logs, I showered and we had dinner before the thunderstorms hit. Yes it was going to rain again and of course turn colder. We still are trying to figure out why we came south to get out of the cold weather. Well that's about it for today so we will say until tomorrow we love and miss you all. Mom & Dad
