On Our Way to Avon, NC and the "Canadian Hole" 9/17/2008

Well we left Waves at about 11:00 as it was only a 15 mile drive down to Avon, NC and Sands of Time Campground and check in there wasn't until 12:30. We got there about 11:30 and they did let us check in and we were all set up by 12:30. We had lunch and then took a tour around town and stopped at the Food Lion and bought some essentials. Not an awful lot in Avon except the usual beach stuff, shops, restaurants, condos and amusements. We did drive outside of Avon to a location on the Pamlico Sound called "The Canadian Hole". Back on its feet in the wake of hurricane Isabel, this wind-lovers' haven is named after the pale northerners who head south to North Carolina's Cape Hatteras each fall. Canadian Hole is the Outer Banks' best windsurfing locale, on the sheltered Pamlico Sound side of the barrier islands. Here, the spaghetti-thin girth of Hatteras Island acts as a sort of wave boom to leave water conditions smooth, yet the low-lying cape doesn't dial down the Atlantic winds. This means steady conditions and the opportunity to pick up some real speed. Windsurfers, as well as kiteboarders, also appreciate the thigh-deep water for easy in-and-out, sandy bottom, and warm Carolina water. After sitting and watching them for awhile we went back to the coach and unpacked the groceries and I showered and Mom read the paper and watched TV. We made pizzas for dinner and after we were done it was time for a little TV and then an early turn in for me. Well time to say until tomorrow and we love you all. Mom & Dad
