Caching and a Ghostly Tale 7/10/2008

We went caching today around Camillus and on into and around Marcellus and Skaneateles. Our first 2 caches were out in Gillie Lake Park where we are having the annual town picnic tomorrow which Mom and I will be going to. The first cache was on the south side of the park in the woods in a mayo jar and the other one was along a road hidden in a fir tree. Our next cache was at Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery which is located on a picturesque countryside in western Onondaga County and is one of only four county run hatcheries in the state, this has been in continuous operation since its inception in 1938 and produces 70,000+ Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout annually. The cache was located back on a nature trail in the woods which we found quickly. The next cache was located at the Mottville Arch Bridge Circa 1800 which is a one lane bridge just outside of Skaneateles. The fifth cache was located in another small park back in the woods. As we drove through Skaneateles we stopped at Skan-e-llus Drive In and had a hot dog and fries for lunch.
Our final cache was located on Cedarvale Rd near a spot called thirteen curves where there is a ghostly legend to go along with this cache and it's as follows: Bride of Thirteen Curves Road....Over 60 years ago, a terrifying car accident occured on Cedarvale Rd in Onondaga County, New York, just ten miles west of Syracuse. Since that fateful day, it has been said that the road, known better by its nickname Thirteen Curves Road, has been haunted by the souls of those who died there.
How the road came to be haunted depends on which of the many legends you believe. But all involve the untimely death of a young bride and groom.
The most popular legend says the doomed pair were negotiating the road on their wedding night, a Friday the 13th. While coming around one of the curves of Cedarvale Rd., the car veered out of control down a ravine and into a nearby creek. The groom was beheaded in the crash. A farmer who lived nearby and heard the crash came up the road with his lantern, and saw the bloodied bride stumbling down the road carrying her new husband's bloody head! The farmer ran to help her but she dropped at his feet...already dead! Since that day, travelers on the road have seen the ghostly image of a bride with glowing eyes. Sometimes she is covered in blood or carries a lantern. In some instances, she simply stands on the hills alongside the road or walks along its shoulder. At other times, the bride seems vindictive, leaping toward drivers and making cars crash. Some who have encountered the phantasmal bride say that she has actually entered their cars. While driving along 13 curves road have been stunned to look in their rear view mirrors and see the ghostly lady, dressed in white and usually splattered with blood, sitting in the back seat. By the time they turn around, she has vanished. The best time to see the bride and her decapitated husband is any moon-lit Friday the Thirteenth, or, of course, Halloween! Caution is advised however, day or night, when traveling this Haunted Road...it is filled with hair-raising hair-pin turns! The cache was located deep in the woods up a hill along the road and the cache itself was a eerie Halloween skeleton mask stretched over a large container hung from a tree about head high and it had a bridal veil over the whole thing and was super clever.
After we finished this cache we drove back to the coach and Mom did our cache logs and I worked on our maps for next year. We went to Nikki and Rosie's summer field lax game and they killed the team they played 15-0. Rosie did play a good game in goal and had 4 or 5 nice saves. We came back and had yummy bacon cheeseburgers for dinner along with fries which was a great dinner. Well time to say so long as that's all the news that is fit to print and we will see you soon and we love you all.
