A Cache Trip Thru the Texas Countryside 5/1/2010
We headed south this morning to our first cache located in Floresville, TX. Floresville, Texas was named for early rancher, Don Francisco Flores de Abrego, who established his ranch about six miles northwest of the current location in 1832. In 1833 the nucleus of the present town was founded on land donated by the Flores family; it became the seat of Wilson County in 1885. With a growing season of 285 days, Floresville is a marketing point for watermelons, flax, cotton, beef cattle, dairy and poultry products. Sandy soils of the area are especially suited to the production of peanuts, and the town's biggest festival salutes the lowly legume during the second weekend of October. Wilson County produces 30 million pounds of peanuts each year. A huge peanut on the courthouse lawn recognizes the peanut crop grown in the area. The first cache was a NRV cache in a tree, next was a cache at the old Floresville train depot, which was very well preserved and kept. Next it was a virtual cache in the downtown area at the Wilson County Courthouse that was related to a time capsule placed there. By the way we ran into another bake sale there and just had to stop and see what they had good......cookies. Then we did 2 caches in the local park where there were several soccer games going on.
Then we were on our way west to Pleasanton, TX and a cache at a grocery store and a virtual cache at The Longhorn Museum, yes you have heard that before so I guess every Texas town has one, which supposedly was The Birthplace of the Cowboy......but who knows. Then it was on south to Jourdanton, TX and a cache in a small park and another in a small local cemetery. Then it was on to Poteet, TX and a cache near an old broken down BBQ pit in a small park. Then we headed north and east and 2 caches, one on a guardrail near a gas station and the other in the parking lot of a Bill Miller BBQ Restaurant, a local operation based in San Antonio. In 1950, on a $500 loan from his father, Bill Miller opened a small poultry and egg business. Three years later Bill Miller Bar-B-Q began as a small fried chicken-to-go restaurant. Fried chicken led to hamburgers and then to barbecue. The second restaurant opened in February of 1963. Today there are 67 Bill Miller Bar-B-Q restaurants.
Then it was off back to the coach for the rest of the day. Well as you can see not an awful lot that was interesting or historical today. Well until tomorrow we will say we love and miss you all. Mom & Dad Dori & Dick
