On Our Way Through WV & MD to PA & Still Raining All 3 Days 5/4-6/2009
We left early Monday morning to drive across WV on our way to our next stop in Gettysburg, PA. We figured it would take us 3 days as it was over 532 miles. Our first stop was at a Wal Mart outside of Charleston, WV. It was on top of a mountain, we had dinner at Fazoli's, found a cache in the parking lot and had a good stay although the guy sweeping the parking lot at 3:30 am sounded like he was coming through the front door. Next day we had planned on staying at a motel somewhere around Morgantown, WV but the best laid plans of mice and men don't always work out. When we got to that area we couldn't find a motel that either wasn't full, that didn't charge a arm and a leg for Muffy and Raggs or that had a place to park the RV. We kept driving and driving up and down and over the mountains and found ourselves at altitudes of 2880 feet, 2710 feet and 2673 feet several times. Not sure what mountains we were in but all I know is that it took a long climb up and a long slow ride down. It just seemed that we went up and down and up and down forever. The gas mileage was terrible also as we only got 6 miles to the gallon with all that up and down.
One interesting thing we did see as we drove along RT 68 in Marylad was Sidling Hill. The Sideling Hill road cut is a 340-foot deep notch excavated from the ridge of Sideling Hill for Interstate 68, about 6 miles west of Hancock in Washington County, Maryland. It is notable as an impressive man-made mountain pass, visible from miles away and is considered one of the best rock exposures in Maryland and the entire northeastern United States.[2] Almost 810 feet of strata in a tightly folded syncline are exposed in this road cut. Although other exposures may surpass Sideling Hill in either thickness of exposed strata or in quality of geologic structure, few can equal its combination of both. There is an Exhibit Center in the westbound rest area to help provide the public with a better understanding of the cut's geology. A pedestrian walkway bridge crosses I-68, connecting eastbound and westbound rest areas to a walkway for close-up viewing of the cut. We couldn't stop at the visitor's center as it was getting late so I took a few pictures out the front window as we drove by.
Well we ended up in Hancock, MD before we found a motel we could stay at and that was 275 miles from where we started in Chareleston, WV. Well we stayed the night, ordered pizza in as there wasn't much in the town and got up and left about 9:00 as we only had 70 miles to Gettysburg now. It was lucky there was a little liquor store by the motel or we would have had to take the car off in order to make the turn out of the parking lot but we were able to go down the road and make our turn and get out. We got to Gettysburg and got set up and I took a nice long nap as I was beat from the day before and the bed in the motel was horrible. We did go to the store and stock up on groceries and that was about it for the day. I called it a day very early that night as I was still kind of tired. Well until next time we love and miss you all. Mom & Dad
