A Lovely Day with Mom in Corning 5/19/2009

Today I took Mom into Corning to just walk around the Old Market area and to have luch just her and me. We got downtown about 10:15 and started walking up Market St which is the older section of downtown. We walked up one side and down the other and to tell you the truth Mom was kind of disappointed in what shops they had there. There were 4 or 5 beauty parlors, lots of bars and restaurants, quite a few fancy art galleries and lots and lots of empty stores. One interesting site we saw was the Benjamin Patterson House which was built in 1796. Benjamin Patterson and his wife, Sarah Patterson, were the first Innkeepers.
Also on the property is the Wixon Road Log House which was built on a hill on Wixson Road in the town of Campbell, New York circa 1855. Learn about the Mack family, who built and lived in the cabin. Stand inside the cabin and feel how small the living space was for a growing family of five. Imagine the day to day hardships encountered as a rural subsistence farming family. Look through a reproduction civil war “care package”, learn what a soldier wanted sent from home.
The working blacksmith shop, the Starr Barn which is a agricultural display and an old outhouse.
The The Browntown Schoolhouse was built in nearby Caton, New York in 1878. This one room schoolhouse was in use until 1955. During this time, kindergarten through eighth grade was taught in the same room.
All these buildings are open to the public and when we visited they were having school classes there showing the kids around the buildings and grounds.
After we got done walking around we stopped at the Olde World Cafe for lunch and had a great sandwich and soup. All in all it was great being with Mom and enjoying the day doing what she likes to do. Then it was on back to the coach and our little doggies. After we went back we changed clothes and picked up Muffy and Raggs and drove to Binghamton to watch Scott's lacrosse team play Corning West and to surprise Anna. Both those went well as Anna was quite surprised and Scott won 9-5. Then it was on back to the coach and beddy bye time as we didn't get back till about 10:30.
Well until next time we love you all. Mom & Dad
