We spent Wednesday around the house, took a walk on the beach and watched some TV, a very uninteresting day at the beach. We do have a sick puppy as Muffy still is not feeling good and has an appointment at the vet on Saturday although I may take her sooner.
Thursday we went caching around Myrtle Beach and really didn't do any historical or interesting caches. The first cache was one we looked for on Tues but couldn't find and today we found it in 30 seconds. It was a small container with a big hairy rubber spider attached to it and luckily Mom didn't find it first. Next cache was one along the intercoastal waterway. Then we drove to the Shore Dr. area for several caches, the first in the woods in a old splintered tree. Next was one located near Dunes Pointe condos in a tree. Next was one in the middle of the Straw Market along Shore Dr and that was in a bush. The Straw Market is a small shopping area that we used to visit all the time when we vacationed along Shore Dr with many quaint shops and a bar we spent a lot of good times in. It has fallen into bad disrepair now as we have heard that they will be building a high rise on the site soon. Too too bad.
Our next cache was down the road along the edge of Singleton Swash which has a little history associated with the area.. In 1791 our countries first president traveled through the Myrtle Beach area as part of his journey through the south. On April 28th George Washington, his men and a local citizen, Jeremiah Vereen traveled through what is now known as Singelton Swash. Our first president wrote the following in his journel on the 28th. "April 28 Mr. Vereen piloted us across the Swash (which at high water is impassable, & at times, by the shifting of the sands is dangerous) onto the long beach of the Ocean; and it being at a proper time of the tide we passed along it with ease and celerity to the place of quitting it which is estimated at 16 miles." The long bay he refers to is what we now call Myrtle Beach. In 1778 Ebenezer Hazzard, the United States Postmaster General at the time wrote the following... "The Swash is a creek which runs up from the sea, and, it is dangerous, if not impossible to cross it at high water, but when the tide is out there is not the least danger. Immediately upon crossing this you enter upon Long Bay..."
Hazzard also wrote the following...
"On the left is the open sea from which the surf comes rolling in with great noise, and often frightens the traveler's horse unless he is very gentle. On the right is a disagreeable sand bank. The best time for traveling is about half or three quarters ebb, for then you have a hard surface to ride upon and may get off the beach before the tide rises so as to incommode you." This area runs along Shore Dr down to the ocean and past the ritzy Dunes housing development.
Next cache was at The Grand Olde Oprey behind some grasses, next was a cache in an old tree root along a new section of MB on Grande Dunes Blvd. Then we had a cache along the beach which was a nano on a electric box and our last cache was along the Grissom Bike Trail behind a tree. After we finished our caches we went and did some cache maintenance on 3 of the caches we placed before we left MB and that someone else had adopted. They had been missing so we replaced them.
We drove back to the house and Mom did our logs after I posted a few notes for some of the caches we did maintenance on. We had lunch and watched some TV till dinner , we ate and then watched TV for awhile until it was time for bed. Well time to say until tomorrow and we love you all. Mom & Dad
